Volgens F1-legende Nigel Mansell heeft Lando Norris het momentum dit seizoen weten te keren en omdat de Brit het momentum nu in deze fase van het kampioenschap mee heeft is Mansell ervan overtuigd dat Lando Norris de titelstrijd met teamgenoot Oscar Piastri zal winnen.
“Ik denk dat ze een mooie onderlinge strijd gaan voeren en dat tijdens heel de rest van het seizoen maar ik denk dat Lando uiteindelijk zal winnen,” vertelt Nigel Mansell in gesprek met ‘Aceodds’.
“Iedere keer wanneer je een race wint krijg je steeds meer vertrouwen en je moet zeer eerlijk zijn tegenover jezelf.”
“Ook al won je de race, op welk vlak kon het beter? En wanneer je eerlijk bent tegenover jezelf en zelfs wanneer je de race hebt gewonnen, dan kan je verbeteren en de volgende race kan je opnieuw verbeteren.”
Volgens Mansell is het ook mooi dat ze bij McLaren beide rijders hetzelfde materiaal, dezelfde wagen en dezelfde kansen geven.
“Ze bevinden zich tijdens de kwalificatie zo dicht bij elkaar,” aldus Mansell. “Het team doet het zo goed door beide rijders van exact hetzelfde materiaal te voorzien en ze hebben voorsprong op de andere teams. Ze moeten zich over niemand anders zorgen maken, dat is geweldig.”
Het seizoen werd tot dusver gekenmerkt door een intense onderlinge strijd tussen Lando Norris en Oscar Piastri. Op de aanrijding tussen Norris en Piastri na in Canada, waarvoor Norris de schuld volledig op zich nam, is er tot dusver sprake van een ‘propere strijd’, iets dat volgens Mansell te danken is aan het management van McLaren.
“Ik denk niet dat de teamharmonie een probleem is, want Zak (Brown) is een van de coolste bazen die er zijn, en hij heeft er de controle over,” aldus Mansell. “Als je ergens de controle over hebt en je je al hebt aangepast aan wat er gaat gebeuren dan zijn er geen verrassingen.”
“Beide rijders weten het, en je zag het ook in Oostenrijk toen Oscar werd gewaarschuwd om niet tegen Lando aan te botsen. Ze willen zo’n manoeuvre niet nog eens zien.”
Er heerst volgens Mansell een ongelooflijk wederzijds respect tussen Piastri en Norris, ook al strijden ze onderling voor de wereldtitel.
“Ze rijden erg goed samen en hoewel er een enorme competitie tussen hen is, heerst er ook een gezond respect. Ze weten allebei dat ze allebei het kampioenschap kunnen winnen.”
“Ze willen het ook op een eervolle manier doen. Het ergste wat je kunt doen, is een kampioenschap op een oneervolle manier winnen.”
The intra-team battle between Norris and Piastri has emerged as the defining storyline of the 2025 F1 season. Apart from a high-profile run-in last month in Canada, for which Norris took the blame, the two young stars have so far kept their rivalry clean and professional.
Mansell sees this as a reflection of the drivers’ character and team culture.
“I don’t think the team harmony is a problem at all, because Zak is one of the coolest chiefs there is, and he is on top of it,” he said.
“If you are on top of something and you have already adapted to what is about to come around the corner, there are no surprises.”
“Both drivers know and you saw it in Austria as well when Oscar was warned not to run into Lando. They don’t want that manoeuvre seen again.”
Despite the occasional tension, Mansell believes the team dynamic will hold, thanks to mutual respect and shared values between the two racers.
“They are driving very well together and as much as there is this massive competitiveness between them, there is a healthy respect as well, and they both know that they can both win the championship,” he said.
“They want to do it honourably as well. The worst thing you can do is win a championship in a dishonourable fashion.”
Fine Margins and a Fierce Fight Ahead
Reflecting on Piastri’s recent struggles, including a time penalty at Silverstone, Mansell offered sympathy – but didn’t shy away from analyzing the impact on the title fight.
“Sadly Oscar screwed up, only a little bit and I sympathise with him but the regulations are the regulations,” Mansell said.
“I have to say Max overdid it a little bit. I think it didn’t help to bring the situation to the attention of the stewards but he was very unlucky to get a 10-second penalty.”
As F1 enters the final stretch, the battle between Norris and Piastri looks poised to go down to the wire. But for Mansell, it’s the driver with the momentum, maturity, and mindset who’s in pole position – and that, right now, is Lando Norris.
“Head-to-head, it’s very, very close, but at the moment, the momentum is with Lando. You come off two wins. Monaco’s a great win, Silverstone’s a brilliant win.”
